24 HOURS Contagious
Self-released
I hate to say it, but I have to say it: this band sounds a lot like “Staind”. This Phoenix power trio cranks put heavy rock with thundering rhythms; low, chugging guitar power chords; and singer/guitarist Justin Paup’s Aaron Lewis-meets-Layne Staley growl. The opening track “Fading”, sounds like a hard driving peek-era grunge song, but falters only on a solo that’s nothing but frantic fretwork. The next track, “My Last Time”, has all the beastly swagger of an early Soundgarden song like; “Outshined” There’s more fret-picking on the solo, but this time, wailing and screaming sound too. The slower songs on the CD like “Gone,” “Reason” and “ Breathe”, all open with some smooth, silvery guitar work and take the listener on a journey through angst and pain. The most interesting track here is actually a cover of Wayne Carson’s “The Letter” (previously preformed by artist as, diverse as The Box Tops, Joe Cocker, and Bachman Turner Overdrive) 24 Hours’ version has got to be the most raucous, pummeling rendition ever recorded. And while 24 Hours isn’t exactly breaking any new ground, the bands energy and enthusiasm just bounces out of the speakers. –N.D.
