Album Notes

The power and sound of two Hammond B3s. Seven of Canada and North America's premiere players came together over three days to play with and against each other in an old fashioned 'cutting' session. Doug Riley (Dr. Music, Ray Charles, Bob Seger) Bill Payne (Little Feat) Michael Fonfara (Rhinoceros, Lou Reed, The Lincolns), Denis Keldie (The Extras, the Lincolns), Rob Gusevs (Kevin Breit's The Sister's Euclid), Richard Bell (The Band, The Grease Ball Boogie Band) and producer Lance Anderson (Anderson/Sloski, Oscar Peterson Multimedia CD ROM.)
All present for each sessions, ready to be called on, to spontaneously 'go out and give it a try.' A soul classic here, a rock standard next, with a few originals thrown in. Back to back organs and a dream rhythm section, featuring Richie Hayward (Little feat) on drums and Colin Linden (guitar) and Dennis Pendrith (Bruce Cockburn, David Wilcox) on bass. Turn on the recorders and capture the drama.
This CD has become the essential CD in a Hammond organ fan's library. Keyboard magazine's Mark Vail raved about it and said, "This is one hot recording".

REVIEWS

tears to my eyes
author: Gazzelle
I became stunned halfway through the first cut. I turned the CD player off until my wife came home so we could listen to it together. "Steel Onions" brought tears to our eyes. At the end of "Magic Carpet Ride," after we came out of our trance and caught our breaths, we both spontaneously applauded the artists. This recording is a rare and refreshing treat, a must-have for all jazz and blues fans.

When I first heard 'Gimme Some Lovin' on public radio 8 years ago, I had to have the song and whatever album with which it was associated. I have since ordered a couple more copies to pass out to friends. It is one of those rare discs that just when you think you've about worn it out, you find yourself slipping it in the player once again, hearing the first few bars of Hip Hug-her or Gimme Some Lovin and finding a smile creeping all over as though for the first time. What is this album? Funk? Jazz? Smooth Jazz? Gospel? All the above? Whatever, I thank those who took the time to put it together; my life has been enriched because they did. I love the B3 Hammond and so much here evokes the sound remembered in church as a kid - the alter call starting with the Leslie kicking in ever so quietly as the tears began to flow. Powerful stuff. I wonder to what extent the church growth of the 70's and 80's was due to the masterful use of the B3 in drawing in young people to a wonderful atmosphere created by magical playing, playing such as heard on this album. As I believe Lance Anderson states in his remarks about 'Drown in My Own Tears' regarding Doug Riley and Bill Payne's wonderful rendition of this Ray Charles' classic, "If my church had been playing music like this every Sunday, I'd still be going."

I'm glad I came across this CD. There is nothing like the sound of a B3, let alone two. The artistry here is top notch and the tunes are great. BRAVISSIMO!

The only thing better than one B3...is two B3's and a half-dozen B3 bashers!

I don't deal out five ***** unless I think the CD earned it in every respect. And this one did. First, we have excellent presentation including a fold-out cover that has commentary on each individual track and organist. The CD itself is jam packed with 14 tracks - and not one will tempt you to hit the "next" button on your remote. And they save the best for last, a fantastic arrangement of Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride." If you love funky B3 jams brought to you by some real hardworking organists, buy this CD now!
