Album Notes
2 Foot Yard-(n.)1. a very small urban garden in which things grow organically, both feeding off of and defying their greater context. 2. a short-changed measurement

These three outstanding young musicians take their audiences on a genre-defying journey through soundscapes that are as innovative as they are accessible. This is violin, cello and percussion as you've never heard them--played with power, passion, humor and virtuosic wit. In the hands of this bold and hard-grooving ensemble, each piece is a miniature slice of life that will change your viewpoint and charge your emotions.

2 Foot Yard shatters the boundaries between art song and pop song by merging the visceral power of rock with the intimacy and warmth of chamber music. Violin, cello, voice, and drums combine to create a cacophony of harmonic (im)balance culled from an astonishing array of musical influences, from acoustic punk to the twang of old country love ballads. This trio features Tzadik recording artist Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Book of Knots) on violin and vocals, Marika Hughes (Charming Hostess, Vienna Teng) on cello and vocals, and Shahzad Ismaily (Marc Ribot' Ceramic Dogs, Secret Chiefs 3, Laurie Anderson) on percussion and guitar, and guarantees an off-kilter ride through the worlds of drama and melody. Combining the harmonic breadth of contemporary classical music and the spontaneity of improvisation, their diverse musical backgrounds come together in one cohesive and unique voice as 2 Foot Yard performs genre-breaking instrumentals and vocal miniatures.

In the spirit of community and paying it forward, 2 Foot Yard will be donating $.50 from every copy of BORROWED ARMS sold in the US both to Food Change in Harlem, NYC and to the Canyon School organic gardening project in Canyon, CA to help promote community-based education and awareness of sustainable agriculture and nutrition as well as daily free meals to those in need.

Inspiring Carla Kihlstedt
It's poetic, pure and necessary.

Must Have & Must See in Person
This trio, Carla-Marika-Shahazad, is amazing!!! I had the privilege of catching a free show one afternoon last June and 2 foot yard was a part of the schedule. Immediately, I purchased their CD. Every song is a gift. Carla’s voice is haunting. If you love strings...you'll love this CD.

Jessamyn Mayher

at long last!
An incredibly attractive package for some stirringly beautiful music. Added to the main talent are a satisfying array of guests, including folks like Tin Hat's Mark Orton and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Matthias Bossi... one of those rare kinds of music that appeals to both heart and intellect. Highly recommended.

Allan White

Everything you could expect from Carla Kihlstedt (from Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) simply BEAUTIFUL... it does stray away from my taste as the album goes on. but the first few tracks are wonderful... if your reading this then chances are you know what your in for.

A lovely record
Don't let the simple brown paper package fool you... the music contained on the disc inside is rich, complex and lovely. Borrowed Arms finds 2-Foot Yard playing a more consistent, more orchestrated sound, in comparison to their first outing. This album doesn't feature any screaming, harsh instrumentation, or much dissonance. It is, on the other hand, much as if the band dressed up as a 40s jazz ensemble, with Carla (and occasionally Marika) crooning soulfully over a rich tapestry of complex and deeply musical playing. There are a few more straight-forward tunes on the disc, but overall, the depth of the production and playing shines, if velvet can shine. This is a record that will reward long and close listening.

flippin' ace
soft and sharp and buzzing and soothing, sometimes all at the same time!

finally, more
I had the pleasure of first seeing TwoFootYard some
years back, as part of the TIN HAT TRIO (in which
Carla also plays) near Lincoln Center, New York City.
I have since been a big fan of all their projects
(check out Carla and Shahzad's 'Flying Low')- and the wait for a new collection has been long in coming -but worth it. I won't go into all the many
sides of this complex and accomplished group. Rather, take a listen yourself- try a few songs and
se if you don't agree that music doesn't get as enjoyable and creative as this, no matter WHAT you
normanlly listen to. Visit their web, their mySpace
and see for yourself. Most excellent.
