Album Notes

‘3 Together’ is Joel Getzendanner (vocals), Steve Rutan (guitar, vocals), and Steve Kim (keyboards, vocals). We first got ‘together’ as classmates at Dartmouth College, finding each other literally by accident, our love of songs acting as the common denominator. Individually, our musical styles and influences are quite different; collectively, however, we quickly discovered that the combination was pretty interesting, the whole definitely greater than the sum of our parts. For whatever reason, it’s endured as a constant despite everything about our lives having changed since.

Our music life at Dartmouth was pretty informal, generally impromptu (though occasionally marathon) sessions in student centers, rehearsal spaces and, as the title suggests, coffeehouses. While not all represented on this project, you’ll hopefully hear glimpses of what we were hearing (and trying to play) back then -- James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Crosby Stills & Nash, Elton John. Acoustic songs, the more harmonies and 'textures', the better.

This project came about as a result of impending reunions and a desire to produce a more definitive statement of our musical 'time' back then. We had recorded previously (which was great fun, more 'live' renderings of our past efforts), but had never really tried to make a 'record' before. By sheer luck and phenomenal good fortune, we hooked up with Scott Mathews (from Tiki Town Studios in Mill Valley, CA), who taught us how to hear our music more completely and get more dimensions into the recording without losing the core essence of what we are. Adding the dynamics of subtle yet truly professional production (realized through Scott's amazing engineer, Tom Luekens), we got exactly what we were looking for in this CD. We're real happy with the end product, and hope you will be, too.
