54 Seconds' music is at once ambient, melancholic, large, characterized by unexpected chord progressions and strange, catchy hooks. The band is spacious-almost experimental, but disturbingly accessible, with unusual harmonies floating above lush, vintage keyboards and the elegant guitar and voice of Spencer Gibb. Combining the best elements of electronica, pop and classic rock, 54 Seconds is late night headphone music at its best.

Haunting, inventive and wonderful
author: Genevieve Picard
Over the years, 54 Seconds' music has become my drug of choice. They've really outdone themselves with their latest opus. COMA is permeated with their talent, dedication, creativity and uncompromising craftsmanship. Each song flows into the next thanks to transitions that are inventive yet so smooth that the emotional journey is never interrupted, culminating in the sublime title song.
The whole album reflects the band's maturity: it is substantial, audacious and exhilirating. I'm moved by the lyrics' poignancy, by their blend of candor and quirkiness, angst and hope. I love the unusual harmonies, the sheer beauty and energy of the melodies, the subtle use of sound effects and children's voices, the hints of past musical influences amidst a very modern, highly original and richly textured soundscape... all that makes 54 Seconds' style unique and wonderful. And of course, there's Spencer Gibb's voice, like a trembling embrace. When this guy sings he's not giving a performance, but the full measure of his soul. It is a very beautiful soul.
This enhanced CD is generously filled with bonus and hidden tracks that are a fan's dream come true. I especially enjoyed watching Jen White's wonderful short documentary, Lowlight, which allows us to witness the agony and the ecstasy of the creative process that lead to recording the song Blown Away.
All in all, Coma is a superbly mixed, haunting record that leaves the listener on a "high", at peace with the chaotic, cruel and alienating world that seems to have inspired most of its songs.
So go ahead, treat yourself. Treat others. This sort of work is what keeps the music scene alive and exciting.
