Underground is a tilt of the hat to the gravity of the 2010 Gulf oil spill disaster. Though BP is taking the fall, and rightfully so, they are only one of the many that this could have happened (and has happened) through. There are many angles through which to look at the situation, personally, politically, environmentally, impersonally, spiritually... and the song has both specific and nonspecific lyrics reflecting the questioning within and without on several levels. The music ties the emotional ups and downs with layers of sound and rhythm, as the waves of the ocean or the beat of the heart of life. Imagine the processes we go through to make decisions, and once those choices have been made there is no going back. There is only moving forward and perhaps awareness, as we hopefully learn from our mistakes. Are all the angles being considered when we set our policies and make choices that can affect the future of an entire region for years to come?
