Inside or outside The Beltway, this Washington D.C. band is the bomb! The 76 DEGREES WEST BAND (the name comes from the longitude of the D.C. Metro) call their style “Nu Jazz-Funk,” further describing it as “instrumental Funky Jazz music with saxophone highlights wrapped in an East Coast Swing.” Bassist/trombonist Leon Rawlings heads up the group, which has a heavy emphasis on horns, with Eddie Baccus covering most of the sax work. Jimmy Sommers is featured on the track “This Summer.” The funk element is undeniable on the band’s dynamic cover of AWB’s “School Boy Crush, ” and “Can’t Keep Runnin’,” featuring Gordon Chambers on vocals, is another stand out performance on this CD. It’s got an infectious old school vibe, reminiscent of The Brothers Johnson’s “Strawberry Letter 23.” With summer on its way, here’s a plan… grab a copy of 76 DEGREE WEST BAND and get the party started!
