In early fall of 2008, Adam Pope decided to cut a few demo’s for a press kit he was preparing. What started off as a few songs in 2 days morphed into 4 studios, 13 musicians, and eventually, a 16 song project that took 15 months to finish.
Instead of coming up with an “album concept”, or writing songs for the album, Adam carefully combed through his catalog and chose songs that audiences had responded positively to when performed live.
As the sole songwriter on every song, he picked each musician with a strong idea on what sounds he expected them to bring to each song, and an understanding of where in the song it would fit. He also trusted the creativity of his band, which led to some magical moments in the studio.
While so many artists take a song and give it their own sound, Adam give each song the sound that he felt like the song itself called for. The songs had first choice in the matter, and Adam was happy to oblige.
This collection embodies a variety of emotions and interesting situations. From going out with his best friend’s mom, to hearing, first hand, from the perspective of the thief who found himself dying beside the King of king’s. You’ll hear a respectful tribute to train engineers, complicated thoughts from a man who has fallen out of love, and the tragic side of story about a man who was shot in Reno.“The Grandpa Song” is a thoughtful reflection of Adam’s heritage and family, and the happy love songs give the listener a step by step glimpse into the way Adam’s personal life was shaping up during this album’s creation (He was dating, engaged, and then married in the same time frame these songs were recorded).
Musically, the songs sound nothing alike, some rockabilly, some country, and some…just Adam.
This album is merely the vehicle to introduce Adam Pope to the world as a versatile writer, old soul storyteller, and entertainer. The only theme that has continuity throughout can be found in these four words…This Is Adam Pope.
