When people ask me what is my favorite story to tell, I answer something like “it depends on how I’m feeling, or on the time of year.” Which is true, mostly. But there is one story above all others. I don’t tell people what it is when they ask, because they have never heard of it, and a 15 second synopsis would not help. Lady Anne is that story. It is based on a dream I had years ago, a dream of a haunted house, a beautiful ghost, a romance. The story in the dream was so complete that it did not have to change much in becoming a story. People often ask, sometimes demand, that I give the story a happy ending – and when I was first working on it, I tried. Many times. And nothing worked. Finally I realized that the story ends the way it ends. That’s what makes it so powerful. Don’t complain to me; it was Lady Anne’s choice.
