THE APPLE SISTERS VARIETY SHOW, starring Candy, Cora, and Seedy, brings a vintage twist to modern comedy with all the verve and vigor of the Vaudevillian stars of yore. Set in 1943, THE APPLE SISTERS VARIETY SHOW is a live, onstage presentation of a radio broadcast on WXYZ radio and around the world to the brave young boys fighting the Axis powers overseas.
THE APPLE SISTERS give a knowing wink to the imagined innocence of a by-gone age, when everyone was chaste, straight and dreaming of victory in the War to End All Wars. In an era of cynical, world-weary comedy, THE APPLE SISTERS are refreshingly unironic and enthusiastically hilarious in their on-air antics and songs.
Following the variety hour radio format of the day, THE APPLE SISTERS VARIETY SHOW includes live original musical performances, comedy bits, special guest appearances, and live radio ads for exciting new products available with ration stamps. Being sisters, however, inevitably sibling rivalry and family intrigue finds it’s way into every APPLE SISTERS broadcast, leaving the ladies desperately off-course until through plucky ingenuity (or more often, luck) they manage to set everything right before it’s time to sign off.
THE APPLE SISTERS became an instant critical and fan success. It began in New York City, where they were the toast of the town, selling-out performances every week at the PIT, opening for Ingrid Michaelson at the Bowery Ballroom and Webster Hall, performances at sketch comedy festivals in New York, Charleston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. In Los Angeles, their performances continue to sell out at their monthly show at the UCB theatre. Their talents have attracted the eye of stars like Ryan Gosling (The Notebook), who recorded their first album, Rich Sommer (Mad Men), Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love), and Emily Jillette, who has been producing their shows in Las Vegas. They are the winners of the peer and audience voted ECNY awards for Best Musical Act and the New York Innovative Theatre Award for Best Original Music.
This rapid acclaim is in no small part thanks to the combined talents and efforts of the women behind THE APPLE SISTERS, Kimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson and Sarah Lowe, all triple-threat veterans of the New York comedy and theater scenes. After devising the idea for THE APPLE SISTERS, the three have collaborated in the writing, production and performance of new monthly shows with terrific results. With the musical direction and live accompaniment of Jerome Kurtenbach, they capture not only the comedy of the 1940s, but the musical spirit as well with their original songs.
Join THE APPLE SISTERS VARIETY SHOW in a refreshing and uproarious trip down America’s collective memory lane, wherever it may lead.
