Album Notes

This album contains all original works recorded between 2004 and 2008. The music uses classical piano as the basis and is threaded through using traditional Chinese musical idioms. This album starts with two quiet, contemplative Ballades, then moves to the three-movement, emotionally expansive Fantasy Sonata, then to three free-form single-movement works. Extended techniques were used to create the special sounds heard in the reprise near the end of the first movement of the Fantasy Sonata; these were all recorded acoustically on the piano, no artificial sound effect was used. A c. 1992 Kawai RX-A 197 cm grand piano was used to record the Fantasy Sonata, The Other Fantasy, and Nostalgic Diversion. A c. 2008 Steingräber 208 cm grand piano was used to record the Solitude Ballades and Detour.
