Album Notes

In late July, during the three hottest days in Portland history, Boo Frog recorded and mixed their self-titled 13-song debut CD at Platonic Studios over a period of 24 studio hours. The songs are mostly first-takes, with minimal overdubs. They range from three-minute rockers (What Would I Do?, Her Heroine), to meandering journeys (Dust Princess, Sunnyside Avenue); from sweet love songs (Walk With Me, Birthday Girl), to heart-wrenching ballads (Crushed), to full-tilt psychedelic anthems (My Parade). Ned Lannamann of Portland Mercury writes, "imagine the garage punk of Pierced Arrows steeped in muddy swamp water for a year or two, and you get something like Boo Frog." (Portland Mercury "End Hits," 2 October 2009)

SO enamored while listening to this mesmerizing CD - I thought I was in the band (shhh, I wish I was). Since I'm not, I am compelled to listen to it on a weekly if not daily basis. I had to write another review since I signed the initial one as a member of Boo Frog. This band is the epitome of deliciousness. - Allyz (I play the circle in the shadows) ~

So Chris Newman has been on a rampage. When I got this latest band/album, I thought it'd be another cool update on his Napalm Beach formula... I was wrong. This band is way deeper than that, and lots spookier. Originally conceptualized as a band for a Lux Interior tribute, Boo Frog has developed into something bigger. We probably all know his guitar playing, songwriting & singing are unmatched here. But the secret weapons are Erika Meyer & Paul Vega. Erika's songs send chills up & down the brain. Her guitar works with Chris's (there's no bass here) to create a neo-GunClub sound, and Paul's drums fit in nicely alongside ALL the other drummers Chris has played with over the years. It seems like these guys have found their muses - and it appears they're all in the same band together. Nice. And if Chris stays on this schedule, he'll have another 20 records out in the next 20 years. These are 13 killers, lined up one after another.

All around this CD wins! 13 Tracks (my favorite number). Awesome sound overall. The lyrics are intellectual & invoke immense emotions. I have a soft spot in my heart for a few tracks in particular: Dust Princess, Sunnyside Avenue & My Parade. Do yourself a favor and enrich your life musically - listen to & buy this CD, if you have not already.
