"From Mexico to Miramar or, Across the Lake of Oblivion," C.M. Mayo's ssay about a journey to Maximilian von Habsburg's castle in Trieste, was first published in the Massachusetts Review, a leading literary journal, in 2006, and won the Washington Writing Prize for Best Essay and was named a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters O. Henry Award for Best Work of Magazine Journalism in 2007. The essay, written in a novelistic style, details the journey in 2003 that was part of her extensive original research for her novel, The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire (Unbridled Books, 2009).
