The idea of overnight success is one of those great contradictions-in-terms....you know, like jumbo shrimp or military intelligence. Putting a lot of years in the performing arts doesn't automatically grant you success of any kind. Hopefully you survive. Obviously Cal Collins was playing the guitar a lot of years before his stint with Benny Goodman got him out of town, and his subsequent albums as a leader where you may have heard him for the first time. This album is a good example of
Cal's playing "before success" and consequently a flavor yet to be tasted.
In the music business, capturing that right moment can give meaning to the word difficult. There was no thought here of studios and levels and length of tracks, for this was never intended to be a record....no preconceived ideas. Could be why
it feels so good!
