The Old Ways

by Carrie Wade

With a picturesque sound that is distinctly American yet colored by the exotic, Carrie Wade is a recording artist who delivers her personal evocations with powerful subtlety and a sublime sense of emotion. Filmic textures harken back to the classic soundtracks of the 1960s, from which melancholy and simplicity of the time merge into the modern world of today where Wade’s songs move the audience in the sometimes violent, sometimes peaceful ebb and flow of living.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Wade is set to release her debut record, The Old Ways, on November 14. Blending a palette of disparate genres and unusual instrumentation into an artful whole of beautiful substance, Wade conceived The Old Ways in collaboration with two select co-producers. As a multi-instrumentalist, Peter Kearns of New Zealand provided arrangements incorporating funky piano, swirling mellotron, harmonium, and elegant string arrangements among other inventive combinations. Bruce Springsteen cohort Marty Rifkin lent to The Old Ways a refined sense of Country, Blues, Folk, and Rock with his Nashville-caliber command of pedal and lap steel, dobro, electric and bass guitar. Modern as they are reflective of pop’s halcyon years, Kearns’ contributions were interwoven in natural concert with the more American traditions represented by Rifkin.

Wade’s music has attracted listeners hungry for songs where expectations are heightened rather than lowered, making “It’s Just Blood,” “Needles In The Waves,” “Cuddling With Doom,” and the title track popular staples of terrestrial and internet radio stations alike. At iacmusic.com, five of her songs have entered the Top 10, with three reaching #1. Recently, a new song by Wade, “Broken Soldier,” has the distinction of not only enjoying its eighth week at #1 on IAC’s Folk/Acoustic Rock/Americana chart, but also has been lodged at #39 on Neil Young’s Living With War Today page at www.neilyoung.com. Other recognitions include Los Angeles Music Awards’ Adult Alternative Female Singer-Songwriter of the Year for her song, “It’s Just Blood.” As the second song on The Old Ways, “It’s Just Blood” also has been featured in the Top 500 entries of Billboard’s World Songwriting Contest. Print media, including a forthcoming review in Music Connection magazine, are taking notice of The Old Ways in advance of its release.

Alive and present on the Los Angeles music scene, Wade takes her songs to the stage with full band at Molly Malone’s on November 14 in celebration of her long-awaited debut.

“Wade evokes complex emotions and abstractions rarely heard from a recording artist of today. The Old Ways is one of the most inventive new records to be released by a singer-songwriter of the modern era.”
Greg Debonne – Music Supervisor, Television

“Carrie Wade is her own kind of musician, and definitely one who’s willing to tackle more than one genre. Her debut release “The Old Ways” is at once hauntingly atmospheric and sweetly melodic. Vocally she’s reminiscent of Martha Davis gone acoustic.”
Bryan Kelly – Owner, Groove House Records

“Carrie Wade is an artist who has the gift of writing memorable hooks with lyrics that grab you and don’t let go. She’s had several hit songs on the KIAC Big 50, showing that her songs have reached a very high standard within the Indie world.”
Dave Walton and Scott Stambaugh – Founders, Independent Artists Company (iacmusic.com)

I have many times found myself listening to The Old Ways in my car and found myself wanting to keep driving. One can get quickly wrapped up in Ms. Wade's story telling and emotional journeys. But it's more than the lyrics. Each song starts with a hypnotic, sometimes ominous, and often introspective musical texture which is simultaneously the raw emotion of the writer, and an open invitation to be let in. I invite you to Drive with Carrie, now!

A New Classic!
And now for a mini-review of Carrie's, The Old Ways cd.

Like most of us, I have a shortlist of albums from artists that in a way set a musical standard for me. These include, Emmylou Harris/Wrecking Ball, Roy Orbison/Mystery Girl, Bob Dylan/Oh Mercy, Harry Chapin/Verities & Balderdash, Robbie Robertson/Storyville and others. Carrie's The Old Ways is now part of that list and has a permanent place on my iPod and in my CD player.

From the opening tune, "Needles in the Waves" to the closer, "Cuddling with Doom", this album is a non-stop treasure trove of songs. The lyrics are intimate and immediate and also leave room for interpretation - the best and most difficult kind of writing in my opinion. The instrumentation and production values are superb and Carrie's singing, phrasing and overall delivery is just outstanding.

Some highlights for me include "Drive" and "In a World that Goes Wrong". Everything about this collection of songs is exceptional and each song is a gem. This is contemporary music that is at once familiar and yet unique. It blends the best attributes of folk, rock, pop and country with a kind of hypnotic grace and beauty. It's the kind of album that all of us, who aspire to be songwriters and artists, hope to create one day.

Carrie speaks the language and is truly a songwriters, songwriter.

"The Old Ways" With a few "New Twists"
I have been watching Carrie live for many years and was thrilled to see her capture it on disc. The feeling and emotion are there on every track. I've always loved "In a World that Goes Wrong," "Drive" and "Sublime" live. They are just as good on this CD. "Blood" is stellar. Wade and peter Kearns have really captured the essence of this material and have added some very cool "ear candy" throughout the CD. Well done. Please go out and see Carrie Wade live if you get the chance. You will not be disappointed live or Memorex.

Purely a music Lovers, must have CD. Carrie Wades Debut works "The Old Ways" luminates. From the opening Song "Needles in the Waves" to the ending track "Cuddling with Doom" I was indeed drawn in by its professional sound and production. It happens, every once in a while, like the blue moon tonight New Years eve an Artist will come around with a classic piece of Art for us to enjoy. Bravo Carrie and also to those who brought it to life.

Love this CD
I’m not much of a hummer, but I’ve found myself humming Carrie Wade’s “Cuddling with Doom,” all day. It’s a lovely song, on a lovely album – both intimate and slyly humourous. And hummable. There are lots of great songs here. Wade has a beautiful voice and the ability to sound intelligent, personal, and poppy all at once. These are pop songs for a day spent at home wryly contemplating the huge loves and losses of more than a few decades. That is what this album sounds like – pure and full of life, but with an edge born of wisdom coloring the whole thing. Good stuff and worth many a listen. I highly recommend it.

carrie wade is, in the words of duke ellington, "beyond category". she sounds EXACTLY like...herself.

wade has done the hard work of synthesising the greats and arriving with her own voice. "the old ways" should catapult her out of the local los angeles scene and give her the national attention she deserves. why? two things: it's the SONGS. carrie is a masterful songwriter, reaching down deep and having the courage to write about whatever she sees. she also has the craftsmanship to let us fill in the blanks, letiing us make the songs our own in the process.

secondly, it's the SOUND. this is hardly a folk or an americana record, although there are strong elements of both. wade uses a non-traditional pedal steel, tasteful drum loops and muted trumpet throughout the record. this is an entertaining record, but it also goes down deep.

if you really want to hear a unique perspective on the state of the human condition AND have something to hum along to, carrie wade's "the old ways" is your record. buy it.

"Eclecticana" - Americana with a twist...
Whether you're an Americana fan or not, this album will please your ears. "The Old Ways" is filled with unique instrumental textures, song arrangements and a creatively cohesive vibe that cruises throughout the record. Wade's writing requires a listen not only for the musical aspect, but for the lyrical content through which her story telling talents shine within these small tales of life, love, and loss. From the foot tapping groove of "It's Just Blood" and "American Boys" to the dreamy exquisiteness of "Beyond Struggle" and the stark truth telling of "Cuddling with Doom", this album is one to be played top to bottom. Want to really treat yourself? Put on some good headphones, grab a glass of your favorite poison, close your eyes and press play.

A fantastic debut from the fabulous Ms. Carrie Wade. Kudos! And folks, the live show will not disappoint. If you're able to catch one, I highly recommend you do.

Beautiful.
A gorgeous album with Ms. Wade’s hypnotic and crystalline vocals at the core. “Love, Me” recalls Bobbie Gentry - spooky and transporting. “Beyond Struggle” features a psychedelic banjo interlude. Organic and unexpected combinations. Delicious and delightful.

AWESOME !
I received Carrie's CD "The Old Ways" a few weeks ago and I have been playing it non-stop in my car. I am especially drawn to "Needles In The Waves" and my favorite cut "Cuddling With Doom". I am not sure where Carrie's "Broken Soldier" can be found other than on IAC Music.com on her profile there, but it is one of my favorite Carrie songs also.
From one, under the radar, singer/songwriter to another all I can say is congratulations Carrie on a great album.
