A fine effort from a young new chip musician.

Meet Chipzel, a young Irish girl with a talent for chiptune. Armed with a Nintendo GameBoy and the self-description that when she's not in the kitchen she's making chiptune, the debut resulting album is "Disconnected", a worthy effort that proves this rising young artist's talent. While the experience is not flawless, the album is non-obnoxious, enjoyable chiptune. "Something Beautiful" kicks things off with a decent bass progression. The next track, "Breathless", turns out to be the best, with its upbeat style and great melodic reprises. "Can't Stop Us", "Waiting", and "Something Beautiful Part II" are all enjoyable listens and include heavy use of an arpeggio-style GameBoy melody sound. Track six, the title song, has a great progression near the beginning, but unfortunately doesn't reprise it in full form later in the song. "When You Realise" is a low point, and tracks eight and nine aren't as great as the first half of the album. But Chipzel rounds things off well with the clever, upbeat "We Knew". Overall, "Disconnected" can be a worthwhile and enjoyable chiptune experience if you can deal with a few setbacks. FINAL SCORE: 3.5 / 5.
