A Great Guitarist Sabotages His Own Album
author: Bill Ross
Christophe DeVilla could be the Wes Montgomery of the new millennium. His guitar playing is nothing short of fantastic and he has a rock solid band that can jam 'til the cows come home. So why only 2 stars? One word...vocals. A gaggle of bad vocalist are served up, ruining every track they're on. Track 2 "You are my girl" is a textbook example of the token, generic, bland smooth jazz vocals that commercial jazz artists are under the supremely mistaken impression that they need to include on their instrumental works. Christophe is reduced to being a session player on his own album when he should be up front and directly in the spotlight on all 10 tracks. The tracks "Tender Love", "Love Is On My Side" and "This Song Is For Roy" feature vocals that consist of repeating the song title over and over. Nothing could be more unnecessary or irritating. There are additional electronic vocal effects on "This Song Is For Roy" that are so awful that they are indescribable. Christophe...Please...You are a monster talent. Please shut off the microphones, send the vocalists out for pizza and beer and just PLAY baby!!!
