Musicians often equate the process of making an album with giving birth. The analogy is particularly apt in the case of Trevor May, who is one half of the dynamic, electric-folk duo 'Cornflower Blue'. Inspired by late-night singing sessions to lull his newborn son to sleep, May and musical partner Theresa McInerny have just released 'Infant Songs', a melodic recording that wraps around your soul the first time you hear it.
Theirs is a unique sound with thoughtful lyrics, lush harmonies and chiming guitars. It has a country edge but also an ethereal quality. "I really like our use of a lot of space in our pieces, leaving wide open holes for the imagination. I guess it's almost like a soundscape,"
Cornflower Blue’s “Infant Songs” is a blues-y folk album with beautiful harmonies, country style guitar riffs and rhythms, and sparse production that shows how beautiful each song is at its core. Theresa McInerney has a voice reminiscent of Jennie Lewis; the whole project is akin to Lewis’s project: Jennie and Johnny. These two musicians seem to be a perfect match creativity and performance-wise. Together they create beautifully crafted songs that don’t require heavy production to show how good they are.
Angel From Montgomery- The first track off the album, and a tough one to follow. This song starts with blues-y country slide guitar giving way to McInerney’s emotion-filled voice. Most memorably McInerney pleads, “How the hell can a person go to work in the morning, come home in the evening and have nothing to say?” which is followed by a guitar-less, stripped down version of the chorus, only to lift your emotions again when the guitar comes back in. Trevor May’s guitar is the perfect accompaniment that is really all this song needs; each riff perfectly fills the space in between relatable, story telling lyrics.
Catherine- One of the few songs with a drum kit, which is refreshing and fits with the upbeat country rhythm guitar and steady, sometimes walking, bass line. May walks you through a very funny and descriptive story about a relationship that I bet will seem all too familiar to many listeners. The chorus’s melody and harmonies followed by some fitting “ooh oohs” really stick this song to your memory like super glue. A ripping guitar solo finishes the song on a high that will leave you either wanting to hear it again or ready for the next song.
Morning With the Young Man- Another song that uses the drum kit to its advantage with country inspired guitar and bass parts. The drums really propel this song into a catchy, harmony laden chorus that repeats in your brain until you are wishing it would come around again. McInerney’s voice dusts May’s leads with surgical perfection, giving him the spotlight while making herself indispensable to the sound of the song and the climax of the chorus.
