The first weekend of May, 2010, an American city was devastated. Dozens of lives were lost. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed. But even as the waters were still receding, Nashville began to rise. "Rise Like the Water" was inspired by one of countless examples of the city's resilient, undeniable spirit.
Norm's River Roadhouse was part local watering hole and part songwriter hangout. For many Nashville writers, the experience of sharing tunes in the lower level of the Roadhouse was without parallel. Something about the intimate atmosphere, the old-country-cellar acoustics, and owner Norm's easy manner behind the bar made every song sound better than it had ever sounded anywhere else.
The 2010 flood came quickly and took everything. And like most affected homes and businesses in the Nashville area, Norm's River Roadhouse was without flood insurance. "Rise Like the Water" was inspired by the first full day of clean-up efforts at the drowned establishment, and the people from all walks of life who gathered to lend a hand. 100% of aritst profits from the download of the track will help Norm rebuild the Roadhouse.
The song's companion piece is a youtube video documenting the destruction and early restoration efforts at Norm's. If you haven't yet seen the video, please click the "'Rise Like the Water' Video on Youtube" link at the left of this page...and spread the word about the video and track download. If none of us can help everyone, each of us can help someone.
Thank you.

another gem from a master songwriter
author: Steve Ferentzy
It's inexplicably sad that this song had to be written at all, but once again Schaefer nails it. With a soul a deep as the Cumberland River, Dan Schaefer plumbs the depths of this tragedy and finds a ray of hope for his beloved Nashville.

What an amazing tribute!

This song definitely captures the sense of community and spirit that has uplifted us here in Nashville since the flood at the beginning of May...fantastic! I saw a sign outside of a church a few days after the flood that said "Way to go Nashville! Keep on loving each other!" This song brought back the feeling that rather than being devastated, we were cheering each other on.
I love it that all the proceeds are going to help Norm rebuild the Roadhouse where so many of us have played and listened and enjoyed that elusive combination of great sound, great atmosphere and true hospitality.
