Album Notes

Dave Fleschner, resident keyboardist with the Curtis Salgado Band for the past three and a half years, has a sideman’s resume with a leader’s ambition. He plays music... live.

Fleschner has performed with B.B. King, The Pointer Sisters, Steve Miller, The Mel Brown B-3 group and The Portland Symphony Orchestra. What’s the common thread in Fleschner’s playing that gets him these diverse gigs?

Soul.

That’s what this record is about. From the opening hits of the title cut, you’ll hear soul. There’s funk, and in the funk there is soul. There’s gospel, and in the gospel there is soul. There is jazz, and in the jazz there is soul.
This music was recorded live in the studio. There were no headphones. There were three musicians, and there was a list of tunes. All but two are Fleschner Originals, the covers being by Nat Adderly and Ornette Coleman.

The Current line-up with Dan Gildea on Guitar and Charlie Doggett on drums was codified at a year long Monday night engagement at O’Connor’s Vault in SW Portland, now moved to the Brasserie.  Here they solidified their own version of conversational improvisation.
