The Real Deal
author: Michael Taub
Dave Keyes is the real deal. He is one of those rare artists who is a link in the chain, whose commitment to his path of music and art has led him to a wonderful place. A true student of the blues, he has had the good fortune to learn from the masters, and this cd is proof of that. He has always had amazing chops, but now, he is the whole package. His vocals are heartfelt, and have that easy and free sound that comes from his heart. He has assembled a group of musicians whose talent and commitment matches his own, and the result is a great album that shares life's lessons and ups and down in a way that is uplifting. From the rockin' jump blues of Blues Bearing Down, he moves effortlessly through gospel, cajun and contemporary americana. Particular favorites of mine are 'Inside of You', with Larry Campbell's great dobro, and the two solo piano numbers, 'Didn't It Rain' and 'Angels Keep Watching Over Me'. These are tributes to Marie Knight and Odetta, who Dave accompanied until their passings. I know these ladies are looking down at Dave with joy, knowing that he is keeping their lights shining bright all around the world. Buy this one.
