Album Notes

It’s there all right, along with a Grammy nomination, numerous featured artist recognitions and thousands of worldwide units later, David Cain & SENSES is releasing its most intoxicating album ever: Want & Need. Recorded at UMEDIA studios in the Hoogland Center for the Arts - David Cain (resident artist, sax, vocals, synths, formerly on the roster of Geffen records...) teams up with virtuoso musicians: David Hoffman (trumpet) who played with Ray Charles for 12+ years as soloist and arranger; Howard Freitag (guitar & guitar synth); Jeff Cunningham (basses); and Mike Newberry (electronic drums)... to make a record that you don’t want to miss.

The tradition of funk, rock, jazz & blues has always been to tell the truth; and David Cain SENSES tells it like it is - the way you like it. From the heart-felt “If you want love, then give love,” to the soulful-like-it-is lyric, “Take away everything that takes me from you.” SENSES delivers soulful lyrics, infectious grooves & shredding solos. And for desert, thankfully love is alive in the form of, “Go ahead, and tell the one you love, I love you.”

And as always, SENSES dances with the muses of their mentors, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Weather Report, Kurt Elling, Stanley Clarke, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Jean Luc Ponty, Yes, Frank Zappa, Ray Charles... without ever missing the beat of their own signature vibe.

As David says of the collaboration, “I created themes, melodies, grooves and brought in these incredible musicians, and everybody was excited to add what they felt. It was a first-take or second-take recording session for everybody! Very cool! ~ I mean, David (Hoffman) just came in, sat down in a comfy chair, in front of the mic, and just jammed, developing ideas with amazing soulfulness and technique. Wow! ~ Then there’s Howard, who is like the infi nite sound machine, creating amazing guitar and guitar synth melodies, sounds and textures. Music-loving concert-heads call him ‘a shredder.’ ~ Add Jeff and his 4, 5 or 6 string bass, fretless and upright, but don’t close your eyes because he’s not just playing sizzling sub-harmonic jaco-like lines, he’s also playing chords and solos and making loops! ~ And Mike, let me just say that on our documentary, we had the cameraman change the shutter speed on the camera so that you could see Mike’s hummingbird-like sticks, hands and feet flying with precision and style, baking the grooves. ~ Luda’s not making music, but she is poetry-in-motion at our live shows, transforming the muse’s story into liquid gold. ~ And me, it’s like in the soul-searching tune I Say It, ‘I never know what I’m going to say. I don’t plan it. I say it.’ I love to jam, to make it up with vocals, sax, synths, drums, sounds... It’s the composer in me. For this album my meditation was on the concept of what I want and need. And I want and need to tell musical stories about love, about peace, about awareness. The muse told me/us what and when to sing and play, so there’s a natural flow to the music, free from the limitations of verse-chorus, verse-chorus. Th is album is about what we want and what we need. All those things.”

Yes indeed, what you hear is pure, fresh, organic, David Cain & SENSES sound. So go ahead, hear it, see it, taste it, feel it, until the vibe fl ows through your senses and leaves you satisfi ed. Bon apetit.
