The practice of yoga nidra, or "yogic sleep," offers the direct experience of Self through guided relaxation and meditation. Yoga nidra is an extremely potent practice, and can be used by anyone, including people completely new to yoga or meditation. Unlike other forms of yoga and meditation, yoga nidra is practiced while lying on the floor - no physical effort or awkward seated positions are involved.
Yoga Nidra: Touching Bliss closely follows the format described in Swami Satyananda Saraswati's authoritative text, Yoga Nidra ( Yoga Publications Trust). Swami Satyananda developed the modern form from a forgotten tantric practice called nyasa.
There are many benefits of regular yoga nidra practice. It can be used for stress relief, to ease insomnia, to reduce pain, and to eradicate habits that no longer serve you - even unconscious ones. The main benefit - and purpose - of the practice, however, is the experience of nonjudgmental Self-awareness.
David Morgan is a Certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher (CKYT) and Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT). He has taught more than 1,000 meditation and yoga workshops, retreats, and classes.
