Album Notes

In Northern California, just above the ancestral Zink homestead, lies Big Bald Rock. It’s about a half mile square of granite; a powerful place that enchanted generations of Maidu long before ours.

Granite is fascinating. Lots of separate elements are joined by volcanic fire into a solid beauty that endures for eons. As it falls apart, it changes the landscape around it.

In this way songs too are made, enjoyed, then change or fade.

This album presents songs from David’s first three albums—Birth, Carnival of Stars, and Pyro—selected and sequenced by me. They are an amalgam of heartbreak, loss, inspiration and love.

I heard many of these tunes as a boy, when our family hosted David with other songwriters, storytellers, and artists around campfires at our home in Southern California. When I started writing songs, these were among the elements in my own creative furnace.

Big Bald Rock is a sacred part of David’s history. He shares it with any friend willing to make the journey. I invite you to journey through these songs with me. May they combine a little with you, see you through a fire or two, and make you a little more durable.

This is the Way of Granite.
