Rousing, tender, funny, romantic, bawdy, fanciful -- these songs from the time of the American Revolutionary War take us back to a time when music was a vital part of everyday life. We hear marching tunes and work songs, laments for beloved soldiers marching off to battle, rowdy drinking songs, and fantasies to while away a long night by the fire. Hymns lifted spirits when victory seemed impossible, and songs served as propaganda, promoting either rebellion or loyalty to the crown. Ballads spread the latest news and let people know of momentous events in the world beyond their village green. Diane's lovely voice captures the mood of each song -- some sung a cappella, and others with guitar, lap dulcimer, or drum. Jonathan Gilbert adds wonderful harmonies and masterful arrangements of recorders, mandolin, whistle, and viola.
