Album Notes

"Our Little Secret" is the debut album from Washington, D.C. singer/songwriter Edward O’Connell – featuring 13 original tunes that showcase O'Connell's knack for writing melodic guitar pop in the tradition of The Byrds, Big Star, Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub and early Elvis Costello. O'Connell has distilled a distinctive blend of chiming guitars, incandescent harmonies, memorable hooks and penetrating lyrics that conjure up a timeless past when great pop songs ruled the airwaves.

For "Our Little Secret," O'Connell brings together a carefully selected lineup of D.C. legends and kindred spirits with a particular affinity for the vintage popcraft that is O'Connell's true love. The record features O'Connell on vocals, acoustic guitars, piano and accordion, joined by a band that includes Karl Straub (The Karl Straub Combo, The Graverobbers) and Buddy Speir (The Blackjacks) on guitars, Scott McKnight (The Jelly Roll Mortals, Last Train Home and The Neighbors) on bass, and Jonathan Babu on drums, with special guests including Bill Williams (Jelly Roll Mortals, Last Train Home and The Tone Rangers). The record was produced and engineered by Jared Bartlett (whose production credits include records by Last Train Home and Luke Brindley), who also contributed guitar and percussion. Five of the 13 original songs are collaborations between O'Connell and Peter Gilstrap, of D.C.'s beloved power pop legends The Neighbors.

A record brimming with densely hook-filled and infectious guitar-driven rock-pop songs, "Our Little Secret" will become a favorite of discerning listeners with an ear for finely-crafted American pop songwriting.

The Nick Lowe / Tom Petty homages on the front and back cover set the bar high, but Edward O'Connell proves himself more than up to the task with his inspired debut. Marrying Elvis Costello-style songcraft with chiming Byrds-like guitars and sterling pop harmonies, "Our Little Secret" delivers the goods from start to finish. From the stellar, hook-laden opening track to the lovely closing ballad, the CD is packed with catchy, expertly-crafted tunes, incisive lyrics, soaring arrangements, and first-rate musicianship. Highlights include "Acres of Diamonds," “With this Ring,” and “Pretty Wasted,” among many others. With this engaging release, O'Connell's immense talent is a secret no longer.

The Secret is Out

Imagine Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, Pat Dinizio and Matthew Sweet locking themselves in a cabin with nothing but some recording equipment and a stack of old Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe albums. The result would be Edward O'Connell's "Our Little Secret," a hook-laden, finger-snapping, sing-along-with power pop gem. If you think I'm being hyperbolic, listen to the sound clips above. Hear what I mean? Buy this now, and recommend it to your friends. O'Connell's music is too good to remain a secret.
