A Wonderful Freshman Offering

Much like the heirloom tomatoes that adorn its cover, Ethan Waldman's new album is fresh, homegrown, textured and bursting with life. From the lush string orchestrations in Paper Cup and Cinematic Moments, to the wistful nostalgia of Isn't It Strange, and from the catchy ebullience of Her Hot Anxiety and Vividly Wild Descriptions to the simple, whimsical elegance of Hudson Valley Sunset, Ethan Waldman takes the listener on a journey that is at once highly personal and widely appealing. His voice has a raw energy, and his lyrics are honest and carefully wrought. So I return again to the tomatoes: one really only bites into a crisp, tangy and sweet tomato a few times per season. Thanks to Ethan, we can now have them all year long.
