The Gil Parris Vibration
author: Ella
A friend of mine, (who's opinion on good music I hold in high regard) recommended that I look at Gil Parris's work for inspiration on melody and strength in passionate playing. Upon downloading Gil Parris's 'A Certain Beauty', I was immediately hooked into what seemed like an intensely emotional journey. I'm impressed by his delicate and deliberate phrasing and his fruitful musical vocabulary. The opening track 'It's a Lie' was anything but that. It was filled with almost painful truth in his playing -- and Botti's meloncholy trumpet only fanned the fire. When I listened to 'There Was a Time' I found Gil's phrasing, along with Dave Mann's-- to be haunting, mysterious and sexy. And if I were to pick a favorite track... it would have to be the duet 'Black to Blue'. The melody and message was powerful to me. There were moments of space and rhyme that fit the theme of the tune... an unfinished love story. Don't we all have one of those? With a weeping guitar and enchanting licks of genius, I became a Gil Parris fan for life. If you're interesed in sincere and emotional guitar playing- buy this album. I plan on going to see him live soon. ( The friend who referred Gil, said that his live playing makes you feel like a voyeur because he goes to such a personal place when he plays. Cool!) Enjoy!
