Janes' debut recording, Occasional Crush was released in the fall of 1998. The critical praise came almost immediately. Maclean's magazine named him one of 100 Canadians to watch. He performed on the nationally televised East Coast Music Awards show in 2000 and was nominated for three awards. CBC radio's Definitely Not the Opera gave Janes his own one-hour special, and he performed on CBC-TV's millennium celebration broadcast. His debut mixed soul, jazz and funk with a healthy helping of straight ahead pop music for an addictive melodic stew.
