This laptop-music pioneer, now a physician, created an array of biological melodies that collide spectacularly with alien rhythms in his fourth major album. His first major work in eight years, these microedits dance elegantly with the macro-scale.

Album Notes

Jake Mandell was one of the first electronic musicians to exploit the laptop for musical production and experimentation. After producing three acclaimed albums and performing countless shows across Europe in the late 90’s and early years of this millennium, Jake returns after an eight year hiatus. Scales of Magnification is his fourth album, a landmark that is classic in its meticulous attention to micromelodies and macropercussion, while evoking a dynamically shifting sense of space, place, and atmosphere.

After ending his three year sojourn in Berlin as a pioneer in the laptop music scene and product manager for Native Instruments, Jake Mandell came home in 2003 to his native city of Boston for medical school.

For the past several years, Jake has busied himself dissecting not only the figurative framework of computer music, but also the literal human substance. Despite the sleepless nights throughout medical school, internship, and residency, the music hasn't stopped. The relentless sounds of the hospital continue to resonate into the music studio.

Influenced by everyday wonder of the ill and the healing, by the biological waveforms both reassuringly regular and frighteningly chaotic, Scales of Magnification is a deft disjunction of technical triplespins and evocative inflections.

After earning his MD in 2008, Jake Mandell is currently a resident in Radiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston.
