Album Notes

What happens when you mix one part Gordon Lightfoot with one part Trace Adkins – add a dash of Jimmy Buffett, a pinch of Cat Stevens, and blend the concoction thoroughly together with a serving of Montgomery-Gentry? One need only sample a cut or two from Jim Davidson’s new album “Which Way From Here?” to get a “flavor” for what this new musical creation is capable of delivering.

Country at heart, yet steeped in the traditions of his Southern & Folk-Rock heritage, Jim has crafted a full-bodied and unique sound all his own. His baritone vocals are out front and often intensely personal – yet his arrangements and delivery are surprisingly contemporary. His ability to re-trace the steps that led him “home to his musical roots” several years ago seem to have connected with a sizable audience as well ... both in, and outside of his coastal South Carolina “lowcountry” home.

“People who don’t know me often ask what kind of music I write. It’s difficult to answer that question because my material seems to cover so much territory. Whatever you call it, my songs tell the stories of my life. I have heard great songwriters like Jeffery Steele, Craig Wiseman, and Rivers Rutherford say ‘write what you know about’. Well, after a decade away from my music (Jim had a “real job” in the high-tech field), I took my guitar out of its case and wrote not only what I know - but what I have LIVED. And these days, I seem to have a LOT more to talk about than I did when I was in college.”

Recorded in January on Nashville’s famed “Music Row”, Jim and his amazingly gifted producer Mike Bush, brought together a team of Nashville’s most sought-after session players to create “Which Way From Here?” This “A Team” as Jim calls them, together with veteran Nashville engineer/producer George Clinton – owner of Bayou Recording Studio and host to such artists as Alabama, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Hank Williams Jr. and many others – worked tirelessly to capture, refine, mix, and master Jim’s melodies and lyrical messages.

Regardless of a person’s taste in music – be it country, rock & roll, southern/folk-rock, timeless ballads, or just good old-fashion “real life” story telling, there’s something here for everybody. Whether it’s the uplifting and celebratory love song “She Makes Being in Love a Good Time”, the hard-hitting country rock classics “You Drive Me” or “Guilty Dogs Bark”, the wildly hilarious “Sunset City Senior Saturday Night”, or the poignant and heart-gripping “Make Time Take Time" or "Fisher of Men”, this new CD warrants consideration by the serious music connoisseur.

Whatever style or emotion it is that Davidson captures, he has managed to bring heart, soul, and his LIFE to the table – essential elements that will not escape his listeners. There is an unmistakable conviction in “Which Way From Here?” … but considering that this project was completed “on location” where country legends have worked, that should come as no surprise.

In listening to Jim Davidson sing, it has made it easier in my move from New York City to Bluffton, SC. He totally rocks and reminds me of singers back home with a Southern sound. Being first-generation Irish, Jim's singing reminds me of another time.

Hmm. I wrote the meat above. Since you sang at my wedding, I didn't think you could get better, but guess what? You did. But, I really didn't expect less. Well done, Jim -- Bonnie
