ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The John Link Vocal Quintet performs wordless vocal arrangements of instrumental jazz and classical compositions.

"Live at Saint Peter's" documents the ensemble's debut performance in March of 1998. Composers featured include Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Claude Debussy, Bill Evans, John Link, Ennio & Andrea Morricone, Modeste Mussorgsky, Erik Satie, and Earl Zindars.

The performers on "Live at Saint Peter's" are Raïssa Dorff (soprano), Kelly Ellenwood (soprano), Alex Greenshields (tenor), Christopher Renquist (baritone), and John Link (baritone and guitarist).

Each of the singers performs as a soloist and as a member of the ensemble. Many of the arrangements feature improvisation.

LINER NOTES by Earl Zindars:

"It was such a pleasure to receive a notice that a concert of voices and jazz instrumentalists was going to be held in Saint Peter's Church in March of '98. Little had been done with the concept of orchestrating famous jazz compositions and classical compositions with a cappella voices, in the pure sense of the term, in concert.

"The concert was fresh and outstanding. John Link led a vocal quintet in which he performed as both guitarist and vocalist. Many jazz performers and composers would have been surprised to hear their compositions performed in such an original style, just as I was when I heard my 'Lullaby For Helene'.

"The original compositions of John Link show creative accomplishments which have developed with each performance. This is worthwhile listening, and the original inventiveness of the soloists, which is done with positive and strong conviction, gives the listener an added sense of joy."

REVIEWS:

"...what better compliment can I give than that...I longed for more? ...I very VERY much approve of the basic premise of the disk: using the human voice as a musical instrument. ...there are no words recognizable in any spoken language; rather, the voices are used to form musical syllables. ...John, the spirit of music is with you." -John A. deLaubenfels

"This is not the usual scat thing." -Delilah

"The inspired works of the John Link Vocal Quintet captivate an audience from the very first note. The mastery of the combined classical/jazz influence, rendered by guitar and voice, makes its presence felt in their release of Live at Saint Peter's." -eSoundz Reporter

The depth of medieval chant and the coolness of jazz.
John Link's "Live at Saint Peter's" manages to bring to mind both the depth and gravity of medieval chant and the cool sophistication of jazz. The CD is all the more layered -- and impressive -- for being a live recording. It's wonderful to know that music of this very specific genre exists.

Wonderfully uplifting and very enjoyable
I was seeking music that had the flavor of gregorian chants with a bit more modern flavor. This CD definitely hit the spot. The compositions on Live at Saint Peter's by John Link are wonderful, enjoyable and very soothing. It satisfied my search for chants with a recurrent theme and some familiar music of my beloved early years. I very much recommend it to all who seek the classic approach to some more recently dated pieces that are well known and not so well known that should become well known to this CD's listeners quickly !!

Jann West

a must for anyone who enjoys exquisite music
This CD defines exquisite music. It brings an all-too-rare combination of haunting melody and beautiful vocalization that soothes the listener and inspires the dancer.

You owe it to yourself
If you have an interest in "music" and not just "tunes", then you owe it to yourself to hear John's vision - or is it audible - of where music can be taken.

Lisa Bruce

This is great! And distinctly John Link.
This music creates a mood you want to stay in so I tend to play it over and over. The pieces performed are by composers we're familiar with but they have a wonderful new feel and John Link's original works are all fresh.

Andrea Berger

This is a treat.
Exotic in a timeless lovely way. It breaths with light and mysticism.

Brian Lee

Beautiful and refreshing
Very interesting arrangements for wordless voices of a wide variety of music. I really enjoyed this a lot. The live recording, which can be tricky, was well-done. I haven't really heard any wordless singing groups since the New Swingle Singers, and this is just as fresh and innovative. I look forward to hearing more from this group. Excellent.

This CD is both beautiful and engaging
John Link has a brilliant way of making listeners hear new details and nuances within familiar music. The works of other composers are presented in ways that make me listen with new ears and a fresh approach. Both his interpretations of other composers and his own compositions underscore the beauty of the human voice, as well as the support of other instrumentalists.

Elegant
This music is intriguing, unique, artful and elegant.

Stimulating and adventurous jazz novelty
John Link arranges and writes jazz-oriented music which varies from classical to Brazilian or world-music oriented cuts. Using "vocalismo" to highlight the guitar he plays, the result is music that is stimulating to listen to as well as relaxing when one needs that. Among other things, this music will not duplicate anything you have in your current cd collection for sure!
