I used to live a block from a club in Berkeley called the Starry Plough that had a great open mic night. I would go there now and then to hear all the great songwriters, get ideas, and try out new material. One particular night, I was at home warming up, and started playing with a nice little fingerpicking pattern. Spontaneously, I started singing a little, a very simple bit of a verse. Then a variation. And another. One more. Straight through, four verses. I finished. I looked up at my wife and said "do you have a pen?"
