Album Notes

File under: Party-rock, Stoner-pop, Wild-art-rock, but NEVER confuse Junebug Spade as this year’s new hipster version of local gods The Flaming Lips. Hailing from their shared hometown of Oklahoma City, some upcoming bands find it difficult to break free from the obvious musical association. Not a problem for Junebug Spade. With a bent toward the psychedelic and those beloved rock and indie bands of youth (Pixies, Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones), ringleader Peter Seay set out to record an album of wild rock and unexpected song structures. The band features some of Oklahoma’s most creative musicians, known more for their off-beat sensibilities than for their conventional indie aesthetic.
The self-titled EP—their first release—was recorded between Seay’s home and Bell Labs (home of go-to indie producer and former Chainsaw Kittens guitarist, Trent Bell). The six quirky (yet existential), college-radio-bound party tunes, blend the enthusiasm and curiousity of the Kinks and Cake with the melodies of Built to Spill and classic Jagger/Richards riffs.
As local darlings, the OKC Arts Council has given the band the coveted New Year’s Eve “Opening Night” slot (headlined by Warner Bros. recording artists the Flaming Lips and Stardeath & White Dwarfs), and they packed the main stage primetime slot at the OKC Arts Festival (visited by thousands each year). Junebug Spade has played all of the main local venues (Opolis, VZD’s, Hi-Lo, Conservatory), been featured many times as an OK Gazette’s “Pick” of the week, as well as in other local rags the NONzine and Look at OKC, and opened up for national artists The Uglysuit (Touch-and-Go) and Mr. Gnome (El Marko Records).
Junebug Spade is currently seeking a record deal.

Listened, bought, and then saw live. Great music, even better show live. Party atmosphere. I'm not the shizznits, but sharing this music with friends got me a lot closer.

Fantastic EP! I bought this at Rhapsody for 4.99$ I'd easily pay 9.00$ bucks for this(love to have it on Vinyl!) My favorite bands are Beatles/Stones/Pavement. I can't recommend this CD/MP3 enough....6 track for 4$ is a steal.....get it before they realize the mistake!

"Beyond the Horizon," the first track on the eponymous debut EP from these Oklahoma City psych-rockers (easy on the psych), starts innocently enough: a tidy little guitar line eases the song in, feeling like it may become the backbone for a semi-peppy progression and an ultimately mellow song. When the keys begin to tinker on top, you can sense it building, and before you know it, the drums crash in and they're off. The song does indeed build off those humble beginnings, but where they take it is certainly bigger than anticipated. Favoring tones between the instruments that are well-tailored for a separation of sound, the parts expertly hold tight together over these six tracks, paving the way for layered vocal melodies that make perfect sense, are never obvious, and are sure to be a welcome guest when they're inevitably stuck in your head.
