ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Wasn’t there a sculptor once, who said that he created an image of an elephant by approaching a block of stone and chipping away everything that was not an elephant? I don’t know how that happens with granite, but I’ve tried to do something like it in this recording, with words and sound.

Simplicity, it turns out, is the hardest thing to achieve and to keep. Standing still takes more energy than a headlong rush. The greatest challenge is to speak the bare truth, so “Speak” seemed the right choice for a title. I’ve done the best I could... I recorded them with just voice and guitar, the way I play them live. Most of these songs are new ones, with a few from previous recordings that I wanted to show in a different light.

The guitar is a Larrivee OM-03. All songs were played in DADGAD tuning, except when otherwise noted. John Pierce strings.

This is my fifth CD - all the others are also available here at CDBaby. I've also recorded a duo CD with Kate McLeod. I've played live and on recordings with David Bromberg, Bohola, the David Munnelly Band, Niamh Parsons, Jim Tullio, Tom Dundee, Dennis Cahill, Michael Smith, Brooks Williams and Andrew Calhoun. I've toured in Europe, Australia, Ireland, England and Scotland as well as the U.S. I'm also a musical theater artist, most recently for two seasons as the lead in Michael Smith's "Snow Queen" in Chicago. I also teach and play the hammered dulcimer.

Very Strong, Very Moving
While this one is just Eggleston and her guitar, it's one of her finest albums I think (not that I don't also like her others).
I like the subtle changes that are wrought on some older songs-- and the nuanced different perspectives on them. and the newer songs are all great I think: I especially like 'Trespass' for it's clear eyed yet poetic approach to romantic quandary,
but all are stong. She is also a terrific guitarist, if subtle and not flashy or grandstanding. Her vocals owe
something to Kate Wolf and Joan Baez, her songwriting something to Joni Mitchell. But Eggleston has carved out her
own significant and unique place and this album shows that. Despite, or maybe because, of the simplicity of approach
here, I hear new and worthwhile things every time I play this album.

Masterful and Inspiring
Kat Eggleston is a master storyteller, singer and guitar player. The CD is simple and elegant--nothing added to obscure the story she weaves with guitar and voice. Listening to it is as close as it could be to the experience of hearing her play live. Her voice contains wisdom, tenderness, humor and theatricality. The lyrics are personal, thoughtful and heartfelt. Kat's guitar playing is spirited, creative, clear and inspiring.

Female Vocal Album of the Year (2009)
Kat Eggleston has given us a gem. The album is Speak and it is a masterpiece. She wrote almost all the music. Gorgeous. Her guitar playing is complex and beautiful, and the voice - perfect. This former singer for the David Munnelly Band and Bohola has played a blinder. Kat. Her guitar and her songs. Each time we listen we hear more.
And, we listen more. An easy and spectacular choice.
