Album Notes

Nearly a year in the making, "Loach" is a wide-ranging collection of styles and moods that is difficult to categorize. Composed over the course of 25 years, the songs reflect life's experiences from joy and mystery to longing and disillusionment, including two wistful shout-outs to the late great Jerry Garcia (What Can I Say & Comin' Back Around). The Grateful Dead are a major influence of the band and the songs here reflect their improvisational folk and blues based approach. The acoustic and electric guitars of the band are complemented with mandolin, violin, banjo and even bagpipe tracks contributed by several outstanding Northwest guest artists including Scott Law, Jori Chisholm and Michael Gray. Despite the breadth of the material, the band weaves it into a coherent whole with a steady understated presence, making this the finest studio work they've ever recorded.

What A Nice Surprise! Original yet familiar.

Sometimes I'm so focused on listening to the GD and Phish and the stuff that's fed to me onSirius JamOn 17, that I don't give newer artists enough time on my personal playlist. And when I do, too many times it seems I'm disappointed, after all, I grew up on the GD so my bar is set very high. Kuli Loach has met my standard and I'm grateful to Larry - for being a part of this and for turning me on to it! What a great album. While the GD influence is noticeable, I'm hearing more than just a dead-style band here. Kuli Loach presents a group of tunes that sound familiar yet original. This I would guess is the standard that most bands would strive for. Blind Man's Boogie is giving me a very nice Little Feat vibe, She's Mine This Time has got something of a Tom Petty thing going on. What Can I Say is a real nice tribute to the Grateful Dead scene of old with a nod to it's continuance, and I especially like the use of what I'd call an Estimated Prophet-like wawa on the jam about half way through. Lyrically, this song is a real nice snap shot of how many people must be feeling. Temptation is one of those songs that just makes you move back and forth, to my ears kind of a cross between the Stones and Skynyrd. But this band saved the best for last. Comin' Back Around not only hits it musically, but what a nice tribute to Jerry, this song should put these guys on the map, and I expect to see Kuli Loach on festival bills sooner than later. But I give this album five stars mostly because it does two things for me - it makes me smile and it makes me move. Great job guys. Rock on! Disclaimer: I casually know Larry, the bass player on this album, but I assure you I wouldn't sacrifice my integrity with a good review just because I know the guy, instead I'd more likely just not review it at all. I paid for my copy and I'm glad I did!

Loach - You Must Get It

Kuli Loach has done it again or should I say outdone themselves with "LOACH". The songs are incredibly well executed and original with influences evident from the Grateful Dead. I have been playing it over and over and still keep finding new tidbits in the music which is very complex with excellent instrument playing and harmonies. On top of all this there is a huge variety of instruments in this wonderfully diverse selection of songs. For Deadheads, Jerry Fans and Kuli Loach fans you will be surpised at how technical and trippy this cd is. You must buy it! For the rest of you I would highly recommend purchasing this CD and getting on the bus because you need to experience it! Five stars, excellent. A+. Great job guys.
