Hailing from the concrete nu-city of Milton Keynes, LIONSEX are a band that have done much to capture the attention of the (never easy to pin down) local rock scene. MK has never been known to stick to one style of bands and in recent years has seen ska/punk maestros such as Capdown (arguably the City's most successful exports so far) and No Cigar emerge alongside brilliant and brutal metal acts like Fell Silent, and is always a much underestimated city for the size of sheer musical talent that lurks within. LIONSEX added their particular brand of hard rock in late 2007. The LIONSEX experience purrs out catchy songs and a big chorus, alongside a spattering of stadium-rock style stage antics and glitz, no matter how large or small the venue they sink their teeth into. Jef, JJ, Davy and Tommy strive to offer a big show, with big songs and even bigger hair. Some criticism is always levelled at bands that "...like to look good and sound good...the bigger the better and in this day and age people need a bit of cheering up. Rock music is about having fun at its core, a response to people telling you 'not to' all the time, not just 'everything is shit and I hate myself'...everything is shit though, true..." (Davy)
In their word, "...blending the sound and attitude of classics as Guns n Roses, Marilyn Manson, Motley Crue and Pearl Jam with a vibrant modern edge, LIONSEX have a generous helping of all you could ever want in your favourite band."
It's hard to disagree if you like any of the classic acts mentioned, but there's far more to LIONSEX and this sound is captured in "GET IT" with the modern production/engineering by Matthew Bond (also guitarist/songwriter in rising British rock sensation The Dirty Youth) and amazing mix provided by ex-Dub War and Skindred members, not to mention experienced engineers and mixers to Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium and Dirge Within.
After their initial start up, when Jef met up with Davy and JJ for the first time and they formed short term covers band The Jammin' Tarts, LIONSEX quickly gathered momentum and recorded their first set of demos just weeks after they officially became LIONSEX in September 2007 and a month later played their first gig at Buckingham Community Centre. Fully glammed up and ready to go, LIONSEX had arrived on the local scene, much to the delight of many and horror of the doubting few.
Soon they had established themselves on the bigger MK scene, playing at the Sno Bar, Craufurd Arms and The Pitz. By the summer of 2008 they had met Tommy Tigers, the missing link. He'd been wowing the local audiences at band jams and gigs since he was 11, where the older musicians named him "Harry Potter", due not only to his likeness for a then 11 year old Daniel Radcliffe who had just appeared on the big screen for the first time, but also because of his remarkable drumming skills. Lending a more classic rock and funk edge to the sound, LIONSEX were complete. By 2009 it was decided that the growing backlog of songs, thanks to the prolific pen and guitar of chief songwriter JJ Lyons, needed to be addressed and an album should be made. It would need finance, so the band came up with a plan to raise the money by combining the 10 demos they'd recorded over the months into one demo-album. Thus "Demolicious" was born - fans could buy it at gigs and online for a fiver, and receive a fully self-packaged disc with a unique number. This would in turn count as a pre-order when the album was finally made. The more they sold the quicker they could record. Hitting the streets in April 2009, Demolicious had sold over 400 copies by August and figuring that they could achieve the aim now, the band searched for a producer who could offer them what they so desperately wanted. Not just another set of demos, but a full 10 track album with highs and lows in moody, big rock numbers, that was in turn all the things the members ever wanted to be, punky, thrashy, funky, glammy, stylish, meaningful and more than anything, a sound that could compete in the mainstream market, whether it be alongside new major acts that dominate the charts, or the trendy remnants of the post-hardcore metal scene that dominate the popular metal magazines and TV stations.
They met Matthew Bond after The Dirty Youth and LIONSEX shared the stage one night at the legendary local small town talent pot the Buckingham Bandjam, which had not only been responsible for LIONSEX spawning in 2007, had seen the amazing band The Swamis a few years previously, not to mention offering hot new local talents like Lecarla a place to try out new tunes and members to a great, upbeat crowd and truly stalwart local promotors Colin and Sean. Matt liked what he heard and saw, and offered to help LIONSEX achieve their aim. Cutting his teeth working at Nott-In-Pill Studios in Newport, he'd worked with metal giants BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and recently up and coming UK rap metallers IDIOM. So they band moved to Matt's studio in Cwmbran, Wales for 10 days, with a van for comfort and a hell of a lot of work to do.
Alongside guitarist Jack Bourne, LIONSEX worked through 10 gruelling days and nights to complete GET IT, and with Matt and engineer Luke Padfield's vision and hard work, and a sterling performance by each and every band member, the aim was achieved. 10 songs, 10 days. All they needed now was a mix that would really bring out the tunes that they felt captured what the LIONSEX song experience is about. Matt took it to Nott-In-Pill where Martin "Ginge" Ford and Jeff Rose were working towards Bullet For My Valentine's as yet unreleased third album. Showing their true rock n roll spirit and dedication to keeping the music industry real, Jeff and Ginge did LIONSEX a massive favour and gave up their days off for a week or two, and produced a truly awesome mix that really brought out everything the band wanted to achieve and more.
By now LIONSEX had helped set up Roar Power Records, in order to give the album a release that it was worthy of. They secured the services of mastering magician Gary Lloyd, a composer and masterer of over 20 years music and film industry experience. His amazing ability to really get something more from the few dBs left to play with added something spectacular to Jeff and Ginge's already incredible mix. Now "GET IT" was complete. The mission that had started with a box load of home made 10 track demos had ended with something they are truly proud to unleash on the world.
Released on the 8th December on Roar Power Records, with 10 searing rock tracks that will brighten your day, heighten your senses and leave you purring for more!
Again, maybe it's better to leave you with their own words...
"...the LIONSEX effect has been cemented by our unforgettable live shows, so now we're taking our balls-out-rock n roll across the city and beyond...join us for the ride, and catch us at a venue near you...if you don't see us at your local and you want some...DEMAND IT!!! Roar like a beast, and let them know - EVERYONE deserves a bit of LIONSEX ;)"
