Someone started drilling deep into the ground
and found that black gold bubbling and oozing all around
and turned it into riches and influence and fame
And the Devil, he was laughing as the moth flew toward the flame

And the oil oozed and spread into everybody's lives
And it seeped into the water and burned into the skies
It spread poison and destruction all around this earth
And the Devil, he was laughing cos he knew what it was worth

Burning in the East, Burning in the West
Petroleum, petroleum, Distillate of death

And "civilized society" depends upon the oil
Stockholders like vultures waiting for the spoil
And nobody is blameless but no one is to blame
And the Devil is well satisfied. To him it's all the same

Now hellfires burn brightly as the oil wells run dry
And sickness takes the living and the heavens start to cry
The planet is defaced and life is compromised
And the interests of the wealthy triumph over the wise

Now there's so many things to buy for it
So many ways to die for it
And the Devil laughs at all we do
As we fight for the last of the poisoned brew
