Blending progressive rock influences, bold musical structures, and strong, stick-in-your-head melodies into a, dare we say, "concept album" package, Perfect World is an album meant to be listened to as an album, each song telling a chapter in a story.

Album Notes

30 years in the making ... really?
OK ... technically Perfect World was produced over 3 1/2 years, still a long time, but the oldest of these songs was written back in my high-school days in the late 70s. Maybe the best came in the 80s, as major life events have a way of wringing music out of you like nothing else. It's largely that period of my life that the album story tells. More songs came in the nineties, and a couple were added recently to make it all cohesive. So yeah ... 30 years ...

So what's this with 70s prog on a "new" album?
Hey, it's in my DNA. It was ELP, Yes, Kansas, Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Styx, ELO, Pink Floyd, and the like that sculpted me musically. I don't try to write that kind of music. It's just sort of what comes out of me when I put my hands on the keyboard.

If I "try" to do anything when writing a song, it's to make it, and especially the melody, musical. That comes from even earlier influences like the Beatles, Hollies, CSN, Three Dog Night and others from that "golden decade" of around "65 to "75. The art of the melody has been lost in most new music. I'm trying to find it.

All I can tell you is that I hope you like it. It's a bit deeper stuff... sure, with catchy melodies, fun rock in spots, and some technical intrigue ... but with a message in there. I'll let you decide what it's saying. Just remember that it's a story, not just a bunch of songs thrown together.

Dare I call it a "concept album?" Dunno, but I hope at least some of you will experience it that way and feel a bit of the joy from listening to it that I've felt from making it ... even if it did take 30 years.

An AMAZING Journey!

If you like 70's ProgRock and just plain old good time fun, this CD is for you. Performed, recorded, engineered and mixed as if it were a full 5 or 6-piece band, it's hard to believe that one man is behind the keyboard mastery here. Matson Music Box is as good as any ProgRock band you can name. With the help of a stellar guitarist and amazing drummer, Matson Music Box puts forth an effort that sounds like a much bigger band. The instrumentation and performances on this CD are as perfect as would be in a Perfect World. Like Steve Perry, Steve Walsh, Steven Tyler, Jon Anderson and many more easily recognizable voices, Ken Matson has an incredible voice that is instantly recognizable as only his. You will never hear another voice that is even remotely close to Ken's. Ken's mastery of the keys is simply amazing. He could stand beside any of the greats in rock, jazz or any other style you can name. This Cat can flat out PLAY! I rank him right up there with Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Jon Lord and any other keyboard great you can name. Ken is easily one of the best I've ever heard! Perfect World is an outstanding journey as seen through the eyes of a young man who, after going through an agonizing breakup, finds the love of his life. You will visualize each step of this journey, walking beside Ken while he tells us the story of one part of his life, the highs and lows that he experienced and then how it all works out in the end. The guitars and drums are impeccably performed here. There is no overplaying for the sake of playing. Each part is carefully thought out and performed with excellence and professionalism. Each part is EXACTLY what is needed for the song. Together with the keyboards, it is simply, in a word - OUTSTANDING! This is music that should not simply be heard. It should be LISTENED to. It should be EXPERIENCED. If there's anything lacking about Perfect World, it's that we're not hearing it on the radio... YET!
