Playing beyond jazz music with an avant vibe, National Boulevard performs with the unusual mix of flute, guitar, bass, drums and even a little kalimba. (It's a full-sized kalimba, but kalimbas are small.)

The music travels to smooth, traditional, danceable and meditative places. Special tracks include an instrumental version of "Angel" by Jimi Hendrix, and a mostly strings version of "Conference of the Birds," the 1970's jazz classic by Dave Holland.

Most of the songs are original compositions by Jimi Durso, winner of two composition awards from the Jazz Composers Alliance. The album also features two compositions by Nicolas Letman-Burtinovic, who plays upright bass and records with the esteemed saxophonist Archie Shepp.

Guest Matt Wilson, whose credits include performances and recordings with Lee Konitz, Herbie Nichols, Ray Anderson and Jane Ira Bloom, lays down creative and musical drum grooves throughout. Karla Harby is National Boulevard's flutist and co-founder with Jimi Durso.

Guest artists Steve Slagle on alto sax, and Greg Heffernan on cello, add their beautiful voices to round out the line up on this truly lovely recording.
