Well folks, I am happy to report that The Variety Hour is alive and well and extremely intense! If you haven’t done so already, get thee to a fast internet connection and listen to the samples offered here. Only then will you be able to understand why any accurate review of Residue is beyond words. All this listener can do is make an attempt to describe the delightful immersion experienced with each play of this CD... Throughout the disc and within each song, Amy X Neuburg successfully glues together wildly disassociated themes and textures and executes them employing masterful vocal talent, seemingly interactive verbal delivery, and a just-right proportion of creative modern technology...Each work produces a full spectrum of aural-visceral reaction: From rendering the listener to a mouse bouncing off walls of dead end corridors in a contradictory maze, to putting you in an early 1930s Dali painting, to watching a sidewalk scene from Mary Poppins, and into finally being able to commiserate into something too deep to explain...Amy’s voice doesn’t pretend anything, she honestly does it all. She ranges from poetic to sexy to emotional to witty to exploratory. And then she hits a few highs where one has rarely heard a human voice ever go, and she nails ‘em perfectly!...Considering modern technology, Residue is not just a collection of studio stunts, but a carefully balanced and well-positioned feast of treats including all kinds of vocal tweeking and looping, always imaginatively integrated, but never too much (and she does this stuff *live* too, not canned!)...Residue is not something you listen to, it’s something you DO... It’s just good art that you get to be a part of... Amy X Neuburg is dangerously brilliant...and yes, there are side effects, consult her web-site.
