Based on longing and unrequited love and replete with minor chords, "Letting Go," the title track of this CD, sets the mood for everything to come after. It compelled the writing of the rest. Political leanings show in "What Birds Know" and the lyrics have a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young feel. "Following You," "Closer," "Searching", "Once," Love Song" and "What You're After" all dig beneath that angst-ridden layer of frustrated relationships. "Waiting" and "You and I" hint at joyous connections (Yes, there are some!). "Song For Dad," written the minute I arrived home after my father's funeral, having broken into spasms of grief while giving the eulogy, is his affirmation about love, I believe, written in his voice. "Fight for Your Soul" was intended to be in the voice of God -- your god, my god -- but works as a song about longing as well. "Come Back" is pure fiction, underpinned with the anger of real rejection and abandonment that we've all experienced.
The greatest compliment I have ever gotten about these songs was from a woman who heard them at a performance in a miked-up barn at an apple orchard and honeybee farm in East Lyme. She said she'd remember them even after she left the building.
