The Baroness	The PondHawks Really Rock! The Pondhawks Have Landed To be honest, I had heard of Jorie Gracen as a rock star photographer and author before I discovered The PondHawks, the band in which she not only plays keyboards, but composes songs and sings as well. I'm a female drummer and rhythm guitarist who has been in garage bands since the mid-60's and admires other female Rockers, especially ones who like myself, are from Chicagoland. Gracen is also a Chicagoland Native - and she did the artwork for both discs. I love the band's logo: a Hofner Bass as the body of the dragonfly known as a PondHawk. I feel this is a nod to Gracen's extensive knowledge of McCartney and his music. She has stated in print she is a huge fan of the man and his music. So, curious, I bought both discs presently on the market. Their first (2010) PondHawks CD, "The PondHawks Have Landed" absolutely blew me away! The music is textured, lush, catchy, and perfectly captures the feeling of bands such as the McCartney and Wings/ELO/Styx sound of the 1970's, puts an individual edge on it, and hones it perfectly for this band. Gracen and guitarist Mario Novelli handle most of the composition and vocals with lively musical and vocal contributions from guitarist Roger Burden, bassist Michael Gillespie, and drummer John Rivera. These five play off one another and with one another better than a lot of other indie bands out there. The voices of Novelli and Gracen blend perfectly. As a fellow musician I can really appreciate the work that goes into each one of these tracks. They are getting a lot of airplay - justifiably so - and I feel they are "The Band To Watch." Their second disc, the EP "Dreaming Over Ireland" (2012) shows how the band has musically jelled and grown even more than before - if that's possible! The lineup changed a wee bit; Roger Burden is a guest artist on this disc. The title track grabbed me and reeled me in. . .but that's another review for another time!
