This 7 song CD is part of larger project, partly funded by COAHSI—(Council on the Arts & Humanities on Staten Island)—including a live performance at the former Staten Island landfill, now Freshkills Park.
The genesis of the idea was that I’d noticed that the songs I was writing were relating more and more to my work as a package designer. (Or at least to the themes I was exploring on my packaging blog, "box vox.") As a local, culturally-charged location that served as a depository for decades of trash, the landfill seemed like the perfect venue for performing these songs. So with the support of COAHSI and the New York City Parks Department, I sang “Songs about Packaging” on top of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill. (Serenading, in effect, the tons of discarded packaging buried beneath.)
Those who signed up for the September 2009 performance, took a Magical-Mystery-Tour-style bus ride to the top of Freshkills Landfill where I sang & played these these songs solo, through a couple of battery-powered amps. The 7-song CD is the "studio" version of these songs with my DIY packaging. Each CD cover is handmade by me with re-purposed materials from my own personal recycling bin. (Pasta & cereal boxes, frozen food cartons, etc.) Each one is different. (If S.A.P. ever threatens to go platinum or anything, I might need to re-evaluate this production method.)
