Album Notes

Acoustic quartet Red Hen delves into the deeper roots of American traditional music, playing songs and tunes from Appalachian Old-Time and Celtic sources. Their authenticity is enhanced when mixed with award-winning music and songs written by band members. Red Hen is Jane Rothfield (fiddle, banjo and vocals), Linda Schrade (guitar, vocals), Scottish native Allan Carr (guitar, acoustic bass, vocals) and Dave Kiphuth (banjo, banjo-dobro, vocals). Boasting distinctive lead voices with great harmonies and hot tunes, Red Hen is acoustic Americana at its best – true roots music!

“Red Hen combines peerless musicianship with tunes and songs that will move your feet…and your heart. Jane Rothfield, Linda Schrade, Allan Carr and David Kiphuth honor the traditions that came before them, but at the same time feel right at home contributing a new lick or phrase to music’s timeline. Above all, they are having fun and it shows! I love this band!” Joe Newberry (Big Medicine, The Red Clay Ramblers)

“I also was blown away by Red Hen– an old-timey band with great tunes and songs, wonderful style and poise. They were an unexpected surprise and a highlight of the NERFA weekend!” Ron Olesku WFDU radio DJ TRADITIONS

Review of CROSSING, by Red Hen-Greg Haymes, Nippertown.com
“Magnificent vocal harmonies and a trio of ace instrumentals. Striking the delicate balance between the traditional and traditionally minded original tunes, “Crossing” is a perfect introduction to Red Hen, who make honest, sparkling acoustic music. This is pretty stuff, and fun, too.”
