First of all, this album is not by some long-lost Jonas brother (at least, to the best of anyone's knowledge). It's by a proud upstate New York singer-songwriter who happens to have the last name of Jonas and recorded with the help of other proud upstate New Yorkers -- specifically from the Capital District (that would be the cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy and every town in between). The twelve songs on the album reflect approximately four years of songwriting, though many more songs have been written in that time frame. Most of the songs deal with relationships ... or, more specifically, relationships that have gone wrong. After all, it's hard to write roots rock songs about happy topics. Then, they'd become pop songs that are then recorded by family-friendly artists. Not that I'm not family friendly, but ... well, just listen for yourself to judge that last fact.
As I said, I couldn't have made this album without the help of my friends in the Albany music scene. They include:
Steve Candlen -- drums, backing vocals and Calm before the Storm's original songwriter (I added the music). This guy's got chops to spare.
Albie -- rip-roaring lead guitar solos on "Memphis," "Flashlight," "Calm," "Giants," and "Freight Train." If you want to hear more of him, check out his band, The Black Fuel.
Troy Pohl -- lead guitar on "Livin' the Dream," "Fractured" and "Gotta Get Goin.'" He used to be in a great band called the Kamikaze Hearts.
Frank Moscowitz -- bass, backing vocals, organ, drums, hand claps, whistler ... and he engineered 95 percent of the album. A man of many talents.
Katie Haverly -- duet vocals on "The Old Town" and backing vocals on "Gotta Get Goin'" -- also, a great singer-songwriter in her own right.
JV Abbey -- lead guitar on "Welcome to the Crew." He knows his away around the blues chords.
Megan Prokorym -- fiddle solo on "Grasping at Straws." Probably the most country-esque song on the album, and I'm not saying that just because there's a fiddle solo on it.
Amanda and Noel -- backing vocals on "Giants." Such wonderful voices from such wonderful people.
Oh, and what did I do on the album, other than sing? I handled the rhythm guitar duties, plus a nifty xylaphone/mini-keyboard solo on "The Old Town" and acoustic bass on "Livin' the Dream."
Hopefully after reading this description, you're convinced that you should buy the album. If not, then just pretend that I am related to the Jonas Brothers and buy it anyway. Once you listen to it, though, you'll definitely be convinced that it's well worth the money.
