Album Notes

With a sound described as "Johnny Cash on mushrooms," Kickland's "Wood Carvings" explores concepts of desperation and redemption using a gritty and authentic experimental folk sound. A sound where melody, mood and uniquely descriptive lyrics thrive. This is Ryan Kickland's second full-length folk album, though it features a combination of folk, world and acoustic psychedelia that has been described as, "Johnny Cash on mushrooms" by one reviewer. The album features Kickland's classic song, "The Wood Carver" which functions as an artist's statement from the first-person perspective of a disenchanted wood carver. The album also features gritty Kickland classics like. "It's Been a Long Week" and "Message to the Warden." There are also a number of very bizarre tracks like, "Doyna Doyna" and "In the Realm of the Animal King" that are sure to please fans of Syd Barrett, Robert Wyatt, etc. This album is a great place to start for those exploring the music of Ryan Kickland.

Review of "Wood Carvings" by Ryan Kickland
author: Eric Conner

This is the first Kickland album that I purchased and I'm hooked. I've always been a fan of Cash, Dylan and the rest of the the greats. I'm always super excited to find a new artist that strikes the same chord with songwriting that those old timers do. Wood Carvings is packed full of great lyrics, laugh and cry lyrics, not your typical subject matter, etc. Kickland's voice is perfectly suited for the mood of the album, delicate at times, gritty and ragged at others. There is some superb musicianship on the record as well. There are a couple of instrumental tracks on the album that best demonstrate Kickland's technical abilities. Just listed to the Wood Carver (first track on the album) and you'll see that you're in for a hell of a ride with this record. Highly recommended.
