A voice like no one else, but one you’ll want to hear.

I first heard this wonderful singer-songwriter at the annual Folk Alliance conference. At least two people said, “you have to hear her”, and I’m glad I did. Sally doesn’t sound like anyone else I can think of, except maybe early Linda Ronstadt with a deeper alto voice.
And this CD – the first of hers I’ve heard – is a joy to listen to. Sally has a fine group of friends here. Gram Parson’s joins her for his tune “Hickory Wind” (performed both acoustically and electrically and Tift Merritt and Marshall Crenshaw help out on other tracks. Eight of the songs are Spring-penned and these are just great too. I particularly like “Red-Winged Black”, whose lyrics remind us that in today’s busy world of cell phones and more, we all need to slow down and enjoy the beauty of life. The arrangement for “Ain’t No Ash Will Born” (again with Parsons’ backing vocals) is another track I keep replaying.
In the cookie-cutter world of singer-songwriters, Sally Spring stands out. Check out a few samples. You’ll find yourself hooked too.

Very good

Very enjoyable album from start to finish. All songs are good, but favourites are the 2 renditions of Gram Parsons' Hickory Wind, Going To California, I Can't Understand Why, Floyd Johnson, Ain't No Ash Will Burn and Red-winged Blackbird. If you like Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Sandy Denny, Janis Joplin or folk/rock from the 70s (with a bit of Americana sprinkled in), then this album is for you. Hope that Sally will tour Europe someday and that she will release her next album very soon.

Very enjoyable from start to finish. No weak songs, but I pick up the 2 renditions of Gram Parsons' Hickory Wind, Going To California, I Can't Understand Why, Floyd Johnson and Red-winged Blackbird as favourites. This album seems to come straight from the 70s. If you like folk/rock or Americana and artists like Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Janis Joplin and Sandy Denny, then this album is for you. Hope Sally will tour Europe some day and will release a new album asap!
