Recorded over ten days in a high mountain picturesque Colorado studio, this album was Von's effort to not only capture great performance, but great tones. The room, the mics, the instruments, the "vibe," it all added up to something raw, good, and truthful. Loud and modern was not the goal; here the goal was honesty. The songs range from Roots-Rock, to American Folk, and something very original from Von was amongst all the songs.
Drummer Joe Bonadio (Martin Sexton/Marc Cohn/Elvis Costello) played these sessions, and amazed everyone in the booth with the off-beat use of a trash can lid, and by playing his kit while holding both sticks and shakers in the same hand. Guitarist Eben Grace (Dan Bern/Jeff Finlin) was the texture man, bringing out the Tele, the Les Paul, the Gretsch, and even an old plywood beater to lay down an astonishing compliment of tones. Bassist Eric Thorin (Brother Mule) layed down his big upright tone on all 12 tracks in a single session, and Angie Stevens (The Beautiful Wreck) contributed her soulful roots backing vocals to finish the recording sessions.
"Being someone who has worked long and hard in the music business at a major record label in Hollywood, I can say that Von possesses that elusive “It” factor that is so often spoken about but is hard to nail down. But the amazing thing is that Von is one of the most gracious, humble and ego-less people I have ever met. These qualities, along with his warm voice that wraps you like a blanket, skillful guitar playing, his heartfelt delivery and wonderful storytelling, will take him far...." -Barbara Leblanc
