SUMMARY:
This San Francisco based singer-songwriter-guitarist releases her debut album after several years of high profile collaborations with Looq Records. Her elastic, smoky alto brings sharply crafted lyrics to life in On to the Next, a blues-and-jazz-infused indie collection of 14 intimate songs. Giulian also skillfully plays all of the instruments on the album, including viola, autoharp and bass.
REVIEWS:
"Her voice...that's something you won't ever forget. It's soft, sometimes a tad smoky, fearless, always sensual and soooo elastic."
-Indie-music.com
"Sez Giulian has the soul of a poet and the voice of an angel...Her elastic inflections stretch from textured tones that comfort you like a warm and womanly embrace, to mildly disturbing deep vocal etchings... [Her] guitar playing exercises finesse, and the rhythm blends percussive embellishments to the already existing beats that were born in the mind of this talented young chanteuse."
- Listen.com
"The singer/songwriter style is personal and well crafted...She is a strong artist."
- Taxi Management
BIO:
Sez Giulian (pronounced Julian) moved to San Francisco in 1997 from Philadelphia. Since then she has gigged regularly throughout the city's bars, cafes and theaters as well as recorded with top local musicians.
Sez has performed her own music at the Fillmore, Cafe du Nord, Bottom of the Hill and the Hotel Utah and has been featured on KALX and WXPN. She has also performed solo cello with opera singers, fronted jazz and punk bands, and recorded and gigged on viola with SF legend Eric Shea.
On to the Next is a blues-and-jazz-infused indie collection of 14 intimate songs. Giulian also skillfully plays all of the instruments on the album. Her songwriting is sharp, catchy and unpredictable, and her lyrics are wry and clever poetry.
Sez began playing piano at the age of four but a few years later traded it in for the classical viola. She taught herself how to strum guitar at sixteen and since then has picked up the cello, bass, Autoharp and accordion. Her song War Against Porn climbed the mp3.com folk charts to #9 in September 2000.
Sez releases her debut album after several years of high profile collaborations with with Loöq Records artists Jondi & Spesh. She co-wrote and recorded several songs on their album The Answer, released internationally in June 2004 to critical acclaim, with her song appearing on the CBS' CSI.
Sez is often compared to Marianne Faithful, Fiona Apple, Ani DiFranco, Norah Jones, Eartha Kitt and Cat Power. She draws additional influence from Kristen Hersh and PJ Harvey as well as Sarah Vaughan and Edith Piaf.
